The story

Every Midwinter Night, Lady Orsolya Venn opens her great glasshouse on the hill above the canal city of Vessary to two hundred guests, to watch a flower bloom at midnight. This year a fence called Mother Cassel wants a book from that glasshouse: the private ledger of the Venn seed-house, bound in black calfskin and kept, they say, in an iron safe. Six coin, no blood if it can be helped. The crew picks its way in: with the guests, over the snowy wall, or up from the canal in the coal. The getting out is another matter.

A Forged in the Dark score for three or four scoundrels, one or two sessions: a job offer in a canal-side taproom, three ways into a palace of glass on a snowy night, a lockman’s safe, a gardener with a secret, a duellist captain, a getaway race through the fog, and a buyer nobody expected.
