The story

In the fog-bound harbour city of Saltreach, debtors who cannot pay are kept on the Patience, an old warship moored in the Narrows, until they are rowed out to an indenture ship on the morning ebb. Three days ago the Debt Court took Marro Quist, the sail-loft master of Stair Quay, who once made every member of the crew the papers they live by. His daughter asks the crew to bring him home before the tide turns. A Forged in the Dark rescue for three or four scoundrels.

A Forged in the Dark score for three or four smugglers, one or two sessions: a plea in a net loft, three ways onto a prison hulk on a foggy night (across the mudflats at low water, on the visitors’ boat, or inside a water cask), a debtors’ deck, a brig below the waterline, a race against the guard boat and the flood tide, and someone waiting at home.
