The story

Brackenford is a sleepy mill village on the river Wendle, below an old weir that holds back a deep mere. For two nights something has been taking grain from the granary, and the miller’s daughter, who went out to see who it was, has not come back. The miller has nailed up a notice offering everything he owns. Small bare footprints lead up the river path toward the weir, and the river below it is running higher every day.

A one or two session 5E compatible (SRD 5.2.1) adventure for four 1st-level heroes: rats in the granary, an ambush on a weed-slick weir walkway over deep water, a drowned chapel kept by its dead guardians, and a race against a turning wheel to save a girl and a village. Built around weapon mastery: shove foes into the mere, trip them on wet planks, slow a runner before the alarm bell rings.
