The newer 5E reference rules: a D20 plus your modifier against a number, with Heroic Inspiration and weapon masteries.

6. 6At 0 hit points you make death saving throws: three successes or three failures

• Ability checks, saving throws and contests: D20 plus modifier against a DC, with advantage and disadvantage
• Attacks against Armor Class with critical hits, cover, range, two-weapon fighting, grapple and shove
• Damage types with resistance, vulnerability and immunity; temporary hit points; death saving throws
• Initiative and the turn budget: movement on 5-foot squares, action, bonus action, reaction
• Every condition, with its effects on rolls and movement
• Spellcasting with slots, concentration and the spells that state their dice
• Short and long rests, Hit Dice, levels 1 to 20 with class features and their uses
• Legendary actions and stat block spells for monsters, and an NPC autopilot that fights by the same checks
• Story checks and traps in adventures, loot, coins and experience
• Heroic Inspiration rerolls, Exhaustion levels and all eight weapon mastery properties
• Species, backgrounds with their ability increases, and feats

The GM runs by hand: Area shapes (the caster picks the targets), reaction spells other than the Shield spell, and class features the code does not run yet: the GM applies them
